Cold weather delays full blooming for cherry blossoms in Tokyo
Tokyo was as cold as mid-winter on March 29, with a low of 4.6°C observed during the day.
Despite the cold weather, many people visited cherry blossom viewing spots to enjoy the light pink blossoms.
March 29 also marked the first weekend in Tokyo since the cherry blossoms officially were declared as blooming.
After warm temperatures on the 28th, the temperature at 2:00PM on the 29th was approximately 5°C (41°F), cooler than in mid-winter, and was also accompanied by rain.
Ueno Park, a famous cherry blossom viewing spot, attracted a large number of visitors however, some of whom tried to have small parties under the trees despite the cold rain.
Visitor: I can't help it, so I'm standing. Standing! I was here yesterday putting down these tarps in a T-shirt. Now, I probably have a cold. I've already been drinking here.
Visitor: Today it was forecast that the tress would be in full bloom, but there wasn’t anything I could do to get the weather to change. I decided I’m just going to have a good time today!
The Japan Weather Association expected full bloom in Tokyo to be on March 29, but due to the cold weather, delayed it until March 30.
