Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae’s approval rating fell to its lowest level since taking office in October last year, according to a nationwide opinion poll conducted by the Nippon News Network and The Yomiuri Shimbun.

Support for the Takaichi cabinet dropped 12 percentage points from last month’s survey to 57 percent, down 14 points from when the administration was launched in October 2025.

Meanwhile, the percentage of respondents who said they do not support the cabinet rose 13 points to 34 percent.More than 70 percent of respondents said they do not approve of the government’s measures to address rising prices, an increase of 15 percentage points from the previous survey.

Respondents were also asked about a proposal to reduce the consumption tax on food and beverages to one percent for two years beginning in April next year, while returning the remaining one percentage point to low-and middle-income households, effectively eliminating the tax burden.

48 percent supported the proposal, while 41 percent opposed it.

Regarding the revised Imperial Household Law, 71 percent said they approve of allowing female members of the Imperial Family to remain in the family after marriage, while 17 percent said they do not. However, 45 percent said they do not support allowing male-line descendants of former imperial branches, which left the Imperial Family after World War II, to return to the Imperial Family, exceeding those who supported the measure at 40 percent.

By contrast, 52 percent supported granting succession rights to sons born to those adopted members of the Imperial Family, while 35 percent opposed the measure.Looking ahead, 85 percent of respondents said they support amending the Imperial House Law again to allow a female emperor.In party support ratings, the Liberal Democratic Party fell eight percentage points from last month to 31 percent.

Its coalition partner, the Japan Innovation Party, stood at three percent. Support for the Centrist Reform Alliance was two percent, the Democratic Party for the People three percent, Sanseito five percent and Team Mirai two percent.

Meanwhile, the share of respondents who said they support no political party increased six percentage points to 39 percent.

The NNN-Yomiuri Shimbun poll was conducted by telephone nationwide between July 24 and July 26.  A total of 1,058 eligible voters responded, including 424 landline respondents and 634 mobile phone respondents.
