Takaichi and Modi agree to hold defense talks and boost economic security

Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae and her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi met in New Delhi on July 2.

S/ Takaichi Sanae, Japanese Prime Minister / Japan and India share a vision as to what kind of international order should be built amid the current global situation. We have agreed to deepen the strategic cooperative relationship between Japan and India toward achieving our common goals.

At a joint press conference following their summit talks, Takaichi announced that Japan and India will hold a meeting of their foreign and defense ministers within the year to expand cooperation in maritime security.

She also said that Japanese companies have decided on investments in India totaling about 2 trillion yen.

The two leaders agreed to cooperate in strengthening supply chains for critical materials such as semiconductors and rare earths, for which dependence on China is significant.

They also released a joint declaration on economic security cooperation.

Takaichi emphasized that the updated version of FOIP, which stands for Free and Open Indo-Pacific and is an initiative she promotes, aligns in direction with Modi's foreign and defense strategy.

The remarks were seen as having been made with China in mind.

The Japanese government hopes to strengthen security cooperation through deeper economic ties with India.

Officials traveling with the Japanese prime minister noted that building personal trust between the two leaders will also be key to the future of Japan-India relations.
