Empress Emerita turns 92 as she keeps abreast of current events and enjoys music
Empress Emerita Michiko turned 92 on October 20.
According to the Imperial Household Agency, she continues light daily exercise to prevent muscle loss.
The agency said there have been no major changes in her health, and she spends quiet and peaceful days with her husband Emperor Emeritus Akihito at their residence in Tokyo.
Due to a decline in physical strength with age, she grows tired more easily than before, and the distance she walks during strolls on the Akasaka Estate has gradually become shorter.
In October last year and May this year, the empress emerita interacted with local residents during her visit to the Hayama Imperial Villa with the emperor emeritus.
This summer, they skipped their usual seasonal retreats to Nasu in Tochigi Prefecture and Karuizawa in Nagano Prefecture out of consideration for the heat.
At their residence, the empress emerita follows current events through newspapers and television news programs and discusses topics such as natural disasters, bear sightings, the impact of climate change on agriculture and fisheries, and the achievements of Japanese athletes at the Deaflympics and Winter Olympics.
She still occasionally plays the piano in the evening, although less often than before.
This spring, she had the opportunity to enjoy a performance by fellow music enthusiasts at her residence.
