Soccer manga 'Captain Tsubasa' ends magazine serialization

The soccer manga "Captain Tsubasa" written by Takahashi Yoichi ended its magazine serialization with the 20th volume released on April 4, while creators announced that the manga’s rough drafts will be published weekly on its website from this summer.

The franchise depicts the growth of soccer genius protagonist Ozora Tsubasa along with his teammates and rivals.

A single episode work of "Captain Tsubasa" was first published in "Weekly Shonen Jump" magazine in 1980, and serialization began in 1981.

After depicting Tsubasa’s elementary school and junior youth days, the series once ended in 1988, but sequels followed, and "Captain Tsubasa Rising Sun" was serialized in "Captain Tsubasa Magazine."

The worldwide cumulative circulation of the comic series is over 90 million copies, according to the publisher.

The manga became popular not only in Japan but also worldwide, with soccer players overseas often citing it as their favorite work.

The magazine series ended, but creators announced that the manga’s rough drafts will be published weekly from this summer on the “Captain Tsubasa World“ site, prompting fans to voice their gratitude on social media.
