5-year-old boy goes missing at hot spring facility in Kagoshima

On June 22, police and firefighters continued their search for a 5-year-old boy who went missing the previous day at a hot spring facility in Kagoshima Prefecture.

The missing child is Tanaka Reo from the city of Yatsushiro in neighboring Kumamoto Prefecture.

According to police and firefighters, he and his family were visiting a hot spring in the city of Kirishima and using a private bath at the facility.

They said the boy disappeared when the parents went ahead to the changing room and momentarily took their eyes off him.

Acting on the parents' request, facility staff called the police shortly past 3:30 p.m. on June 21, saying a child may have fallen into the river.

Reo is believed to have gone outside through a window of the bathing room.

A river runs nearby, and the facility's manager says there was no fence between the building and the river.

About 100 police officers and firefighters are conducting a search for the boy, taking into account the possibility that he may have fallen into the river.
