Mount Fuji climbing season opens as officials debunk false eruption rumors
Mount Fuji officially opened for the 2026 climbing season on July 1, and climbers set off for the summit from the Yamanashi side early in the morning.
The mountain began to brighten shortly after 4AM. At around 4:40AM, the sun rose above a sea of clouds.
On the Yamanashi side, climbing restrictions are now in their third year.
Climbers are required to pay a 4,000-yen entrance fee, and the gate at the Fifth Station closes at 2PM. to discourage last-minute overnight climbs.
Self-checkout kiosks have also been introduced at the Fifth Station entrance this year, allowing climbers to pay the entrance fee digitally.
As the climbing season gets underway, false rumors about Mount Fuji are also spreading online.
A user posted on social media that "Mount Fuji has erupted," but that claim is false.
The misinformation was posted on X immediately after the earthquake on June 26 and had been viewed more than 160,000 times as of 5PM on July 1.

Yamanashi Prefecture says it has confirmed multiple cases of similar false information and is urging the public not to believe or spread unverified rumors.
