Ishiba expects lowering of Trump tariffs to strengthen Japan-US alliance

Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru said he expects the lowering of Trump tariffs to lead to further strengthening the bilateral alliance and promoting growth in the Japanese economy.

He added that he will do his best to work on realizing these developments.

Ishiba made the remarks in Tokyo on September 5 after US President Donald Trump signed an executive order that includes lowering tariffs on Japanese car imports from 27.5 percent to 15 percent.

As for small and medium-sized businesses and other entities in Japan that will be affected by the tariffs, the Japanese leader said he will work on minimizing the impact on the economy and employment through measures such as funding support.

Ishiba said he entrusted Akazawa Ryosei, Japan's Cabinet minister in charge of tariffs negotiations with the United States, with his letter to Trump, saying he wants to build a golden age of Japan-US relations together and invite the president to Japan.

The prime minister said Japan tackled the tariffs negotiations with the United States with full effort and described the outcome as a wonderful accomplishment.
