Prince Hisahito enjoys life on campus as he prepares for coming-of-age ceremony

Footage of Prince Hisahito attending the University of Tsukuba was released for the first time ahead of his 19th birthday.

The prince, who is a first-year student in the School of Life and Environmental Sciences, is said to be leading a fulfilling college life.

His activities include riding his bicycle around campus, participating in group field work in his fundamental biology course, and participating in multiple clubs.

Hisahito also helped at the school festival where he sold mini castella cakes alongside friends.

On September 6, the day of his 19th birthday, the prince will participate in formal rituals to mark his coming of age.

The ceremony was scheduled a year after Hisahito turned 18 and became an adult so that he can place priority on his transition from high school to university.

It will be the first coming-of-age ceremony for a male member of the imperial family in 40 years, the previous one being his father Crown Prince Fumihito.

The ceremony will begin in the morning with the dressing of traditional wear gifted from Emperor Naruhito.

Later, Prince Hisahito will express his gratitude to the emperor and empress.

The emperor will award the prince with the Grand Cordon of the Supreme Order of the Chrysanthemum, the most prestigious award in Japan.

Members of the imperial family will enjoy a private dinner at the Imperial Hotel afterwards.

According to close sources, Prince Hisahito spoke with his father about the ceremony, rehearsed multiple times, and wholeheartedly prepared for the day’s events.

Prince Hisahito is the nephew of Emperor Naruhito and second-in-line to the Chrysanthemum throne.
