Mag 5.5-quake jolts Tokyo area, injures two and disrupts bullet train service
A magnitude-5.5 earthquake struck the Kanto region including Tokyo around 7:46PM on June 16.
The quake, centered in southern Ibaraki Prefecture, registered a lower 5 on Japan’s seismic intensity scale in parts of Gunma and Saitama prefectures.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is urging residents to remain alert for earthquakes of up to lower 5 on the country’s seismic scale over the next week.
Officials also warned that rockfalls and landslides are more likely in areas that experienced strong shaking.
The epicenter lies within one of the Kanto region's most active earthquake zones, where an oceanic plate is subducting beneath the continental plate.
The earthquake left two people with minor injuries in Gunma Prefecture.
A teenage boy and a woman in her 20s in Gunma Prefecture both fell inside their homes and suffered head injuries.
Rail services were also disrupted.
JR East temporarily suspended all services on the Joetsu Shinkansen, as well as the Hokuriku Shinkansen between Tokyo and Nagano.
Following safety inspections, train operations resumed shortly after 10PM.
