Trump tariffs could reduce Japan's investment in the U.S.: PM Ishiba

Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru / I expressed my strong concern that the U.S. tariff measures will reduce the investment capacity of Japanese companies.

Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru made the remarks following a phone call with US President Donald Trump on Monday.

Ishiba said that both Japan and the U.S. had agreed to appoint cabinet ministers in charge of the matter to continue discussions.

Akazawa Ryosei, Minister in charge of Economic Revitalization, has been appointed for tariff talks with the United States.

Ishiba emphasized that he will continue to strongly request that the U.S. review its tariff measures through the talks.

He also said he is considering visiting the United States to meet with President Trump in person.

The move comes after Trump revealed 24% reciprocal tariffs on Japan.

The US President’s announcement to impose a 25% levy on auto imports and the reciprocal tariff on Japan could deal a heavy blow to the country’s economy.
