Bear captured after 28-hour standoff in northern Japan
NNN Reporter: It seems that they might be waiting for the bear to stop moving. Staff from Akita Prefecture are going inside the barrier now.
This is the scene right after a bear was captured.
The captured bear had been occupying a warehouse within a wholesale market in the City of Akita since around 11:00AM on December 22.
The male bear measured about 1.3 meters in length and weighed 73 kilograms.
On the afternoon of December 22, it was observed ambling along inside the storage facility.
The city placed containers filled with rice bran and honey near the entrance of a cage trap and stood by.
However, perhaps out of caution, the bear was reluctant to enter, and the stalemate persisted.
Then, at around 3:00PM on December 23, about 28 hours after the bear was first spotted, the surveillance cameras showed that the bear had been captured in the cage trap.
NNN Reporter: It is about 4:30PM. A vehicle believed to be carrying the bear-capture cage has departed from the warehouse. After more than a full day, the bear has finally been transported away.
The wholesale market saw disruptions, including the cancellation of a flower auction that was scheduled for December 22.
