McDonald's Happy Meal Chaos over Chiikawa:Purchase limits as Resales heat up

In Tokyo, we spoke with a woman and her child on May 22.

Mother, 6-year-old (1st grade), and 3-month-old:
“We came because tomorrow is the release date for the second series of Chiikawa, and my child really wanted to see it.”

They came to see the popular character Chiikawa toys displayed in front of a McDonald's.

Q: Do you like Chiikawa?
Child: “Yes.”

Q: Is Chiikawa cute?

McDonald's is offering "Happy Meal" sets that come with food items like burgers and a toy depicting either Chiikawa characters or those from Minecraft: The Movie.
The second series of toys began on May 23.

The “first series” started on May 16th…

At that time, there were reports of traffic congestion in front of stores...

Sales far exceeded expectations, and many stores soon ran out of toys.

Father and 7-year-old daughter (2nd grade):
“We managed to get the first series last Saturday.”

Child:
“I got all the types.”
“Chiikawa!”
“I like it because the face is cute.”

While some families were happy they got the toys…

This mother  and child...weren't as lucky.

Mother and 10-year-old son (5th grade):
“There were no toys in the Happy Meal today, so we only got fries.”

Child:
“I’m a bit sad.”

They said they couldn't get the first series.

“Resellers bought everything up. I wish they would save some for the kids who want to buy them.”

We looked into what happened to some of the Chiikawa toys.

NTV Reporter Namiki Moka:
“When we look at flea market sites, we see many Chiikawa toys listed.”

Happy Meal toys were being sold on flea market sites.

 On another flea market site...

“Some are priced over 4,000 yen.”

And somehow, even toys from the second series, which are supposed to go on sale tomorrow, are already listed.

To ensure more children can get the toys, McDonald's is again enforcing a purchase limit of up to 4 sets per person. Reselling is believed to be a major reason for all this.

A legal expert says reselling itself is not illegal, and is rather a moral issue.

Q: Which Chiikawa toys will you buy tomorrow?

Father: “All of them…”

Child: “All of them!”

Will the children's wishes come true? The situation is still not under control.
