Japan's Emperor and Empress and Dutch royals watch Japan-Netherlands World Cup match

Japanese Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, who are currently on an official visit to the Netherlands, watched the World Cup soccer match between Japan and the Netherlands alongside King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima.

The imperial couple watched the match at Het Oude Loo Castle, the Dutch royal family's country residence.

The four had dinner at the castle on June 14. Following the meal, they watched a televised broadcast of the World Cup match between Japan and the Netherlands, which kicked off at 10PM local time.

Photos released by the Dutch Royal Household show the Emperor and Empress smiling while wearing "Samurai Blue" towels representing Japan's national team.

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima wore orange towels in support of the Dutch team.

One of the photos included a selfie featuring the Emperor and the King, reportedly taken by King Willem-Alexander himself.

Prior to departing Japan, the Emperor and Empress were seen off at Haneda Airport by the Crown Prince and Crown Princess Akishino.

This is the imperial couple’s first visit to the Netherlands in 13 years, since attending King Willem-Alexander's inauguration in 2013.

Beginning June 17, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako will participate in a series of official state events, including a welcome ceremony, a wreath-laying ceremony at a war memorial, and a state banquet.

On June 20, they will travel to neighboring Belgium for an official visit.

This marks the first time in 24 years that the imperial couple have visited two foreign countries on the same overseas trip.

They are scheduled to return to Japan on June 26.
