Man in 50s arrested for starting fire at Shibuya Scramble Crossing in Tokyo
The Tokyo Fire Department said it received an emergency call shortly after 9 p.m. on April 3 reporting that fuel that was spilled caught fire at the scramble crossing in front of JR Shibuya Station.
The gasoline-like liquid was poured onto the crossing and ignited, but the fire was quickly extinguished, and no one was injured.
According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, a man in his 50s later turned himself in at a police station, claiming he had just set fire to the crossing.
Police arrested him on suspicion of obstructing traffic, and he admitted the allegations during questioning.
One of Tokyo's iconic landmarks, the Shibuya Scramble Crossing is a busy intersection where pedestrians from all directions cross at once when the lights change.
