Bear eats 2 metric tons of apples from orchard, causing 2 million yen in damages

In this surveillance footage, you can see a bear strolling along leisurely.

The footage was captured on November 13 at an apple orchard in Ueda, Nagano Prefecture.

Is it being rather wary?

After surveying the surroundings, it approaches the tree, stands up, deftly plucks an apple, and begins to eat it.

Then, two days later, on November 15...

Another bear, equally plump and rotund, appeared in the orchard.

You can see it munching away on the apple that had fallen on the ground.

Could it be the same bear? Looking at the footage, it appears to be the same size.

Looking closer, you can also see that this bear has been captured and tagged in the past.

According to the owner of the orchard, it has been appearing almost every day since the beginning of November, between 9:00PM and 5:00AM.

About 2 metric tons of apples have been eaten by the bear so far, with losses amounting to roughly 2 million yen, or about $13,000 USD.

In response to this situation, cage traps have been set up at two locations in the surrounding area by city officials and the hunting association.

Officials are also calling for the proper disposal of discarded fruit to deter bears.
