Tsunami warning in Japan triggers evacuations in coastal areas
The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a tsunami warning at 9:40AM due to a large earthquake with a magnitude of 8.7 near the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia.
Please evacuate immediately to a safe place such as high ground or an evacuation building.
The tsunami warning was issued for the eastern Pacific coast of Hokkaido, the central Pacific coast of Hokkaido, the Pacific coast of Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, Ibaraki, Chiba Kujukuri and Sotobo, Fukushima, the Ogasawara Islands, Shizuoka, southern Mie, and Wakayama.
In addition, tsunami warnings have been issued for the western Pacific coast of Hokkaido, the inner coast of Chiba, the Izu Islands, Sagami Bay and the Miura Peninsula, and the outer coast of Aichi.
People living in coastal areas or along rivers where warnings have been issued should immediately evacuate to high ground, evacuation buildings, or other safe locations.
In areas where a tsunami warning has been issued, people in the sea should immediately get out of the water and move away from the coast.
Regardless of the height of the observed tsunami, please remain in a safe location until the warning is lifted.
