Megaphone cuts through noise in busy restaurants for disaster preparedness

S/ Niikura Kumiko, NTV Reporter / When this megaphone is used, the voice is converted to a higher pitch.

This special megaphone has been developed to make sure evacuation instructions and other messages can be clearly communicated in noisy places such as busy restaurants when a disaster occurs.

It was tested at an izakaya restaurant in Tokyo on December 4.

S/ Test announcement / Earthquake! Protect your head. Earthquake! Protect your head.

S/ Participant / The tone is completely different from normal conversation, so I think it would probably be audible.

The voice is converted to a frequency between 3,500 and 5,000 hertz, which is higher than normal speech, making it easier to hear in noisy environments.

The craft beer maker in Nagano Prefecture that developed the device expressed hope that this will serve as an opportunity for people to think about disaster preparedness while drinking and dining.
