Japan launches new agency to oversee foreign resident policies

Ishiba Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan:

Strict measures against those who break the rules, and the review of systems and policies that are not fully addressing the current situation concerning foreigners, are important challenges the government must tackle.

The Japanese government set up a new agency on July 15 to coordinate policies related to foreign residents, aiming to tighten measures against crimes and disruptive behavior by some foreigners living in Japan.

While Prime Minister Ishiba noted the importance of harnessing foreign economic activity, including inbound tourism spending, he also pointed out that some foreign residents have been causing public anxiety and a sense of unfairness among the Japanese.
