Japanese woman fatally stabbed while livestreaming

A 22-year-old woman was fatally stabbed on March 11 while livestreaming outdoors in Tokyo’s Takadanobaba neighborhood popular with students due to its proximity to top universities.

S/ NTV Reporter/ This is where it was reported that a woman in her 20s was stabbed with a knife.

A 42-year-old man was arrested at the scene of the crime on suspicion of attempted murder, but police are set to change the charge to murder. 

Multiple people had witnessed the crime.

S/ Man working nearby/ While working, I heard a loud voice screaming for help. It was a very intense scream. Like aah! Help!

S/ NTV Reporter/ How long after the scream did the man stay?

S/ Man working nearby/ He was probably there the whole time. He was watching the situation until the police came. He was calmly watching. Maybe around 10 minutes.

The witness said he thought the man was helping the woman because of his calm demeanor.

S/ Man working nearby/ The man was apprehended by the police and then I realized that the person was the suspect.

S/ Nearby resident/ The woman was on the ground and the man was apprehended by police. He was expressionless and staring at one point.

The man was also seen claiming to be the suspect.

S/ Passerby/ (Police were asking) who did it? Is the perpetrator around? And he raised his hand and was arrested right there.

According to police, multiple calls came in around 10AM and the suspect was arrested within 10 minutes.

The woman was stabbed in the head and neck with a 13-centimeter blade survival knife dozens of times.

She was confirmed dead at the hospital.

A selfie stick was found at the crime scene where the woman was in the middle of livestreaming.

The suspect told police he located her from her livestream.

Another witness said he saw the man using her phone after the attack.

S/ passerby/ The man picked up her phone or some device and was filming the woman’s face. He put it down and was immediately arrested by the police.

S/ passerby/ Yes, to her face.

The suspect claims that he did not intend to kill her and denies the allegations.

According to investigators, the man claimed that he lent over 2 million yen to the woman and decided to commit the crime because she would not pay it back.

The suspect also claimed the two became acquainted after the man began visiting the restaurant where the woman worked.

This is an ongoing investigation.
