Wild bear culled under emergency hunting system for the first time
The NNN filming crew filmed this large bear in Akita Prefecture, northern Japan on October 15.
The reporting team continued filming the mammal from inside their vehicle, as the bear remained undisturbed.
A bear was spotted in a residential area in the city of Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, also in northern Japan on the same day.
The city culled the bear under the emergency hunting system for the first time nationwide since the regulation was enacted in September 2025.
Locals are being asked to remain vigilant as bears become more active before hibernation.
The Japanese environment ministry announced on October 15 that bear-related fatalities have reached 7 people nationwide in fiscal 2025, the highest number since they started collecting the data.
