New "Anpanman Train" Unveiled for JR Shikoku's Kotoku Line
JR Shikoku has unveiled a new Anpanman Train to the media in Takamatsu, Kagawa Prefecture, in southwestern Japan.
Beloved by children across the country, Anpanman and Baikinman are among the 46 characters featured on the train’s colorful exterior. The new train, which will be introduced on JR Shikoku’s Kotoku Line, marks the 25th anniversary of the Anpanman Train and will begin service on October 25.
While the new model doesn’t feature the popular “Anpanman seats” seen in earlier versions, the ceiling is decorated with cheerful designs so passengers can still feel immersed in Anpanman’s world.
The train is a remodeled 2600-series express that will run between Takamatsu and Tokushima as the Limited Express Uzushio, making five round trips a day. With this addition, Anpanman-themed trains will now operate across all JR Shikoku limited express lines.
“We hope people will visit Shikoku for this Anpanman Train — not just to use it as a means of transportation, but because they want to experience the ride itself,” said an official from JR Shikoku’s Anpanman Train Promotion Office.
“Hi, I’m Anpanman! Thank you for riding the Anpanman Train today. Have a wonderful trip!”
A departure ceremony is scheduled to be held at Tokushima Station on the first day of service, October 25.
