Man swindled out of 10 mil yen in rice fraud
According to police, a man in his 60s living in Miyagi Prefecture, received an alluring email on his smartphone last month.
The email read that carefully selected domestic rice was on sale for a limited time.
The man followed the procedure to purchase 10 kilograms of rice for 5,000 yen from a website that was indicated in the email, however, the product did not arrive.
When the man reached out to the seller, he received an email informing him that the product was out of stock, and was instructed to proceed with a return.
The man reportedly proceeded with the transaction using an online app of the bank that he uses, while he shared his screen with a man claiming to be a customer service representative.
The man then received an email from his financial institution saying that a transfer was made from his account for approximately 10 million yen, or about 68 thousand US dollars.
While the man had unknowingly made a bank transfer, police are investigating this as a case of fraud.
