Knife attack on Tokyo subway platform, 2 injured
An alarm sounded on the Tokyo subway at around 7:00PM on May 7.
At the same time, passengers were rushing out of the train car one after another.
Bystander: What’s happening? Someone suspicious?
Bystander: Is it a suspicious person?
After rushing up the stairs...
Many people were standing in front of the ticket gates, seeming to not understand what had happened.
The footage you just saw was from...
Todaimae Station on the Tokyo Metro Namboku Line.
Police officers and firefighters rushed to the scene.
The reason for the alarm sounding was...
Emergency Call: There’s a man at Todaimae Station, brandishing a knife, and someone’s been injured.
A man in his 20s was waiting for the subway on the station platform when another man, without saying a word, attacked him with what appeared to be a kitchen knife.
We talked to someone who was at the scene when it happened.
Bystander: When the train doors were about to close, the alarm went off. I got off the train and I saw a lot of people running towards the ticket gates, so I ran that way too. When I looked, I saw blood on the platform. I could see that the injured person had bandages on his head and that blood was running down.
A man, believed to be the victim, could be seen being taken by ambulance from the scene.
A 43-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder for attacking the other man with a knife.
The injured man is believed to have been attacked from behind as he boarded the train.
The suspect then attempted to board the arriving train but was subdued by a police officer and another passenger.
In the process, the passenger sustained a cut to his right hand, but the injury is believed to be minor.
Witness: People who were boarding the train didn't understand why they were being pushed out while they were boarding, but someone getting off the train said, “He’s got a knife”, so everyone just started getting off the train. It seemed like the people who were already on the train just suddenly got up and started rushing off the train. It was just surprising.
This is the kitchen knife that is believed to be the weapon the suspect used.
The blade is about 20 cm, or 8 inches, in length and was seized by authorities.
It is believed that the suspect and the injured man do not know each other.
As a result of the incident, the Namboku Line was suspended between Komagome and Ichigaya stations.
The suspension affected other stations like Tameike-sanno Station as well.
Announcement: Operations are currently suspended. It is expected to take some time before they resume between Ichigaya and Komagome stations. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause to passengers.
Even 2 hours after the incident, the effects continued...
Namiki Moka, NTV Reporter: Todaimae Station is still closed off to passengers. It appears that forensic work is being carried out inside.
Station Staff: Operations are not expected to resume at this time. Station transfer services are available. Please use the transfer service.
Those who were affected by the shutdown could be seen asking the station staff for help.
Bystander: I was surprised by what happened, and was worried that I might run into the suspect... There’s no way for me to get home, so I thought I'd just go back and study at the university.
Bystander: I never imagined something like this would happen. It’s scary because I use this station almost every day.
According to investigators, the suspect has remained silent, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Police are still looking into the details of the incident.
