Chief secretary inspects reuse of Fukushimas decontaminated soil
Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi Yoshimasa inspected on July 22 the site where decontaminated soil from Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant was buried at the yard of the prime minister’s office.
S/ Hayashi Yoshimasa, Chief Cabinet Secretary/ I believe it was a significant initiative to get the ball running.
The law states that the contaminated soil that was stripped off and cleaned after the nuclear accident is to be disposed of outside of Fukushima Prefecture.
Around 14 million cubic meters of the soil is contained in the land surrounding the nuclear power plant.
The government aims to reduce the final disposal amount by reusing low-level radioactive soil in public construction sites throughout the country.
Decontaminated soil was transported outside of Fukushima Prefecture for the first time to the prime minister’s office to increase awareness. However, the soil only amounted to 2 cubic meters.
The Ministry of Environment plans to expand the reuse to other ministries in the future.
