Heavy rain falls on Hokkaido and other areas of Japan, more downpours expected
Japan’s northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido experienced extremely heavy rainfall through the early morning hours of August 28.
Authorities issued a series of emergency heavy rain alerts, and a linear rainband formed in the Kushiro area.
In the afternoon, intense downpours are expected in western Japan where a weather front is lingering.
While rain in the Hokuriku region on the northern side of central Japan has eased, heavy rain could fall on August 29 as active rain clouds are expected to move back to the area.
Rainfall in Hokuriku is forecast to reach 80 millimeters by noon on August 29 and 120 millimeters by noon the following day.
Officials are urging people to stay on alert for rain-related disasters.
