Emperor and Empress visit Hiroshima 80 years after WWII to commemorate A-bomb victims
Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako visited Hiroshima on June 19.
They made a stop at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park in the afternoon.
This year marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War Two.
The emperor and empress offered flowers at a cenotaph for victims of the atomic bombing of the western Japanese city in the closing days of the war.
The cenotaph, built near ground zero, contains 128 registries on which the names of 344,306 people are written.
This is the imperial couple's first trip to Hiroshima to commemorate victims of the atomic bomb since Naruhito ascended to the throne in May 2019.
Hiroshima was the first place ever in the world where an atomic bomb was dropped during an armed conflict.
The emperor and empress also visited the Exhibit Facility for Atomic-Bombed Remnants that was opened three years ago.
They looked at displays of artifacts and remnants from the atomic bombing.
The facility shows part of what actually remains in the area around the park after the atomic bombing on August 6, 1945.
