Takaichi and Marcos upgrade Japan-Philippine ties to comprehensive strategic partnership

S/ Takaichi Sanae, Japanese Prime Minister / Today, President Marcos and I agreed to position our bilateral relations as a comprehensive strategic partnership. This represents the determination of both countries to continue strengthening our relationship as like-minded nations in a sustained and multilayered manner, unaffected by changes in the international environment.

S/ Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Philippine President / These substantive discussions with the Prime Minister have demonstrated the vigor with which the Philippines-Japan comprehensive strategic partnership will proceed, built on a foundation of friendship and shared values for peace, diplomacy and adherence to international law.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. was visiting Tokyo as a state guest in conjunction with the 70th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and the Philippines.

In his summit talks with Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae, the two leaders discussed security issues and agreed to begin formal negotiations toward a GSOMIA, which stands for General Security of Military Information Agreement.

They also reached an accord to promote the transfer of defense equipment from Japan to the Philippines.

On the economic front, they decided to move forward with discussions toward reviewing the existing bilateral economic partnership agreement.

In light of the prolonged deterioration of the situation in the Middle East, Takaichi and Marcos reaffirmed cooperation through the framework known as POWERR Asia, which aims to provide financial support to Asian countries for the procurement of crude oil and petroleum products.
