Chinese tourist arrested over alleged pickpocketing on a train in Japan

Japanese police have arrested a 36-year-old Chinese national on suspicion of theft.

According to police, the man allegedly stole a wallet containing about 15,000 yen in cash and other items from a woman’s tote bag on an Odakyu Line train in August this year.

The Odakyu Line connects Tokyo and Kanagawa Prefecture.

He reportedly came to Japan in June on a short-term visa.

This is the second time he has been arrested on suspicion of theft.

A 35-year-old Chinese national who was staying at the same hotel as the suspect has already been arrested and indicted on theft allegations.

The indicted man has told investigators that he entered Japan with friends who are pickpockets and that the purpose of their visit was travel and theft.

Police believe the 36-year-old suspect came to Japan to engage in so-called “theft tourism,” posing as a tourist and repeatedly carrying out pickpocketing.

Police said he has denied the allegations.
