Nissan unveils AI-equipped next-gen ProPILOT driving assistance system
Nissan Motor has unveiled its third-generation ProPILOT driving assistance system equipped with artificial intelligence for the first time.
The Japanese automaker used a development prototype based on the electric vehicle Ariya for a demonstration ride on the streets of Tokyo.
In complex traffic environments, the car, with 11 cameras and six sensors installed on it, uses AI to determine the next move to make.
One such situation occurred at an intersection with crosswalks.
S/ Iijima Tetsuya, Nissan Motor / Here, it's not sure if the pedestrians will cross the road or not. Should the car move because they're not crossing, but maybe they will? This is a difficult decision that (the AI) will think hard about.
According to Nissan, the new system uses cutting-edge AI that has been taught about various traffic environments and how situations can go through changes.
The company said the technology is capable of comprehensively grasping surrounding information, predicting what can happen and what effects its actions can have as well as making appropriate decisions that a seasoned driver would make.
S/ Iijima Tetsuya, Nissan Motor / We have reached a stage where we can realistically think about how to accurately understand human drivers and proceed with replacing that (with car driving behavior). That's the big progress.
Nissan plans to install the system on some cars that will be sold in the Japanese market during the fiscal year that starts in April 2027.
