Japanese toilet manufacturer halts orders as naphtha shortage spreads

Japanese toilet manufacturer TOTO suspends orders for prefabricated bathrooms due to a shortage of naphtha, a key petrochemical feedstock, following disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.

Japanese toilet manufacturer TOTO announced on April 13 that it will suspend orders for prefabricated bathrooms.

The move comes amid a naphtha shortage caused by disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.

The company said supplies of adhesives, used  to apply film to bathroom walls and ceilings, were running short.  Coating materials for artificial marble bathtubs are also in limited supply.

The company did not state when orders can be resumed.

The manufacturer said there was currently no impact on its other products, including its flagship toilets.

The effects of the naphtha shortage are now spreading across industries as the disruption in the Strait of Hormuz continues.

Costs  for items in Japan such as plastic wrap and synthetic leather used in school bags have also been rising.
