Awa Odori underway in Tokushima

Even back-to-back typhoons couldn’t keep people off the streets in western Japan.

The traditional Awa Odori dance festival launched today in Tokushima Prefecture.

The festival began in ancient times as a way for people to honor their ancestors.

This year’s event follows typhoons that brought record rains to Tokushima.

Colorful dancers and musicians filled the streets of Tokushima City.

One dance leader said he’d never experienced such typhoons, and that he hopes the festival encourages people.

The Awa Odori runs through August 15th.
